The Three Magi

About the Work

This work was commissioned by three exceptional soloists. To compose something compelling for Vitaly Starikov, Vesper Park, and Hao Yang, I found a common denominator in their almost magical ability to conquer even the fiercest instrumental writing with effortless grace. Sharing a name with one of the Biblical Magi, I thought this would be a fitting title for a trio paying homage to these virtuosos, who each bear a gift of musical wizardry. I followed this historical trope and decided to recontextualize medieval techniques of isorhythm and mensural canons used in early sacred music as an offering of my own.
